Mata Atlântica in Amsterdam

Inspired by the botanical book “Historia Naturalis Brasiliae” commissioned by Count Johan Maurits (Governor Dutch-Brazil 1637-1644), we created this wallpaper for this impressive house in the center of Amsterdam. The wallpaper depicts the Mata Atlântica around São Paulo, Brazil. With a flora and fauna setting of a typical landscape of São Paulo country side with the mountain Pico do Jaraguá, the purple Manaca da Serra, the yellow Guapuruvu and of course the little capibara’s under a Flamboyant tree. Both wallpapers are painted separated in our studio with the same light as the conservatory to create more depth and realisme. We used a grey-green color scheme to match the existing paneling and ceilings of the historical rooms. In total we have painted over 24 square meters over a period of approximately 4 months.

This news item from National television showed the beautiful Manor
“Museum Oud Amelisweerd” (MOA) where museum director Yvonne Ploum
explained how the original wallcoverings from the 18th century are an
important source of inspiration for wallpaper artists Marcelo Gimenes
and Jaap Snijder.



 The hand-painted wallpaper (or wall hangings) is a typical Dutch craft
during the 17th and 18th century. The wallpaper was often used in a
so-called 'room around' and became out of fashion by the end of the 18th
century. Partly due to the rise of the industrial revolution in England
and France, this craft has completely disappeared.



It is estimated that
95% of this decorative art was lost, presumably resold in pieces as
paintings that were especially popular abroad.

The artists duo Snijder & CO has picked up this craft and revived it
with contemporary materials.

Dinsdag 23 januari 2018 was de filmploeg van “Hallo Nederland” in het
nieuwe atelier van Snijder&CO voor een reportage in het kader van
het Europees Erfgoedjaar



In de NPO2 uitzending met Jeroen Latijnhouwers komt het prachtige Museum
Oud Amelisweerd in beeld. Directeur Yvonne Ploum toont de originele
behangsels uit het 18de eeuw die voor behangkunstenaars Marcelo Gimenes
en Jaap Snijder een belangrijke inspiratiebron zijn.

Het beschilderen van behang (of behangsels) is een typische Nederlandse
ambacht uit de 17de en de 18de eeuw. Het behang werd vaak toegepast in
een zogenaamde ‘kamer in het rond’ en raakte eind 18de eeuw uit de mode.
Mede door de opkomst van de industriële revolutie in Engeland en
Frankrijk is deze ambacht volledig verdwenen.



Naar schatting is 95% van
deze decoratieve kunst verloren gegaan, vermoedelijk in stukken
doorverkocht als schilderijen die vooral in het buitenland gretig aftrek
vonden.

Het kunstenaars duo Snijder&CO heeft deze ambacht weer opgepakt en
met hedendaagse materialen nieuw leven ingeblazen.
